Seven years after opening the door of Simplylife Yoga, the husband and wife founders feel it is time to breathe new life into the yoga studio that has filled their everyday life with purpose. The makeover of the yoga studio is an effort not only to provide a more conducive space for yoga practitioners but also a way to get closer to who they have become as a yogi over the course of 7 years,
Some interventions were made to the existing layout. Half of the existing spacious but underutilised outdoor terrace was redevised to accommodate a new reception area. The other half is turned into a convertible outdoor yoga space, whereby a new glass sliding door is introduced to replace the existing fixed glass panel between the outdoor terrace and the main yoga studio, to enable the outdoor space to be used as an extension of the main yoga studio, to cater for occasional crowded yoga classes or workshop. This new extension area has become especially crucial dealing with the current pandemic crisis where capacity limitation has become a challenge to allow for appropriate social distancing.
The visual presence of the existing dimmed and darker ambience has transformed into a bright and crisp space by harnessing the abundance of daylight from window apertures at different heights and angles. Through the simplification of design, materiality expression and colour selection, every nook and cranny of the studio seeks to yield a sense of warmth and calmness. Sparring use of furniture in the studio is in sync with the founders’ clutter-free lifestyle, only limited pieces of carefully selected furniture that serve the purpose are present in the studio. The circular element reprised throughout the entire studio, from the doors to the benches and selection of light fitting as well as the new logo design, is an expression of ‘full circleness’ of the founders’ current inner state of being.
In short, the new Simplylife Yoga is the manifestation of the founders’ vision and visceral responds to years of quiet introspection, and the labour of love and passion in creating a space that restores a sense of equilibrium, providing a brief interlude between the moments, when a yoga practitioner steps into the studio and before they step on to the yoga mat, to quiet the mind and relax the body as the hustles of the world outside faded away, get ready for the classes ahead.
